Can belly dance really flatten your belly?

I get asked lots of questions about the physical benefits of belly dance and the inconsistencies in societal awareness is always kind of surprising. Some people think that you can’t belly dance if you’ve been injured or that it’s not suited for older people. I’ve heard people say it’s dangerous for pregnant people. Still others think that it will flatten your belly and define your abdominal muscles.

The truth is that, like any physical activity, it depends on the person, but in general belly dance is safe for 90% of humans. Not only is it safe, but it has its own unique benefits as well! Let’s take a look at some of the many benefits of what we call “belly dance”.

Muscle Tone & Strength

The movements of belly dance are focused on the isolation of the core, hips, chest and arms which helps build strength and define muscles. The repetition of these movements can have benefits similar to resistance training in building strength.

Core Strength & Posture

Core engagement is a huge part of belly dance. This naturally improves core strength and stability. The standard “belly dance” posture also promotes better balance and helps your body learn to align itself more efficiently.

Flexibility & Range of Motion

What I call the “ooey-gooey” movements of belly dance help increase flexibility in the hips, spine and other joints. The repeated practice of these can help gain a greater range of motion and better body mobility.

Heart Health

Once you learn the basic movements, you can increase the intensity of your belly dance practice and get a great cardio workout. Regular cardiovascular workouts improve heart health, increase your stamina and can even help with weight management.

Stress Relief

Let’s just say it … dancing is fun and it makes you feel good. Belly dance also requires a bit of focus so it’s a great way to get out of your head and into your body. Focusing on the present moment can help promote relaxation, quiet your mind and reduce tension.

Better Balance and Coordination

I hear people say that they can’t belly dance because they are uncoordinated, that is exactly why you should belly dance. This dance will absolutely improve your balance and coordination if you practice regularly.

Belly Dance for Bone Health

There have been some recent studies suggesting that belly dance might actually stimulate bone growth. This dance is a weight-bearing exercise so it can be an important step in maintaining bone density as we age.

Benefits for Pregnant People

I will say again that I am not a doctor. I will also say that I have danced with women who continued dancing until they delivered. Those “ooey-gooey” movements I mentioned earlier, especially the ones focused on hip movement, are wonderful for alleviating swelling and pain in the back, hips and knees. These same movements can be great for helping move labor along. Which is also why you should not practice belly dance if you experience Braxton Hicks or early labor symptoms. Women have even told me that they have used some of the movements during labor to help stay focused and breathe through contractions.

Consult a Real Doctor Before Belly Dancing

If you are unsure whether belly dancing is safe for you, I would recommend asking a medical doctor for their opinion. Your physician can give you reliable medical advice based on your personal medical history.

The physical benefits of belly dance are pretty undeniable. It can even be modified for those with limited mobility or disabilities. You can practice beside a wall or next to a chair if your balance is compromised. You can even practice some movements sitting or lying down.
